'Bacchus' (Koala) |
||
It's probably unusual for an Australian wildlife artist, but this is my only Koala painting to date. The title for the picture was decided the moment I saw this guy. To me he looked exactly like a drunken & slightly pudgy Roman god of wine with staff in hand, sleeping off the effects of a binge. I even toyed with the idea of a crown of vine leaves - But i'm glad I left it out. Of course Koalas don't drink wine, in fact they pretty much don't drink at all, getting their moisture from their diet of eucalyptus leaves. These leaves are in fact highly toxic, and would kill other foragers, but the koalas lengthy gut helps it digest its food, at the expense of having to spend most of its time resting to allow that digestion.
