'Cougar Study'

I've always loved the Cougar. When I was a little kid it was my very favourite animal. I thought it was very cool having so many names too. Cougar, Puma, Mountain Lion, Painter, Catamount, and more! I always wanted to see one & was devastated to find out it was American only. Of course most Americans will never see one in the wild, they are not only scarce, (particularly the near extinct South Eastern race known as the Florida Panther), but highly secretive.

At about age ten I went to Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney, where I knew they had a cougar. I couldn't wait! Imagine my shock to find him in a wire & concrete cage about 6 foot by 15. To make it worse there was a huge enclosure nearby for a rare variety of eight inch long tortoise. I was livid! (I think I threw a screaming tanty on the spot!). Of course it was only a temporary enclosure, but the shock turned me into an instant wildlife activist.
