'Emerald Dove Sunning'

The Emerald Dove is a real jewel of Australia's temperate rainforests. This one is sunbaking as the species is wont to do. Formerly called the Green Pigeon (Emerald Dove is much nicer - don't ya think?) these birds are relatively common, but I never tire of seeing them. The green color is a very particular shade, & glows beautifully in sunlight, while appearing almost black in shade. The rich chestnut on the primaries is seldom seen when the bird is perched or foraging, but it completes a rather wonderful color scheme. This picture is owned by a friend of mine, so its one of the few paintings I see regularly. I quite like it!
