'Forest jewel' (Azure Kingfisher)'

The bird in this painting was an Azure Kingfisher someone brought to me after it had been hit by a car. It wasn't badly hurt, but the shock & a slightly injured wing meant it was an invalid for a couple of weeks. During that time I photographed & drew it often, as I've always loved these guys when I've been lucky enough to see them in the wild. Eventually it recovered enough to fly down my hallway, & I took it out for a test flight in a quiet park. It flew well, but was obviously worn out after fifty yards or so, so I took it back home hoping to give it another go in a few more days. Unfortunately just as this time arrived its condition suddenly worsened , and it died of a 'bug' (so said the vet).

At least this way it survives in a fashion. There is nothing quite like the startlingly vivid blue, and deep, rich chestnut whizzing across a rainforest creek. It looks to blue to be real! I hope you get to see one one day!
